From KANSAS! Magazine: Readers’ Choice – Kansas Small Towns!

Back on January 29 we launched our readers’ choice: Kansas Small Towns. We only considered communities with a population less than 5,000. On March 14, the nomination period ended. Out of 100+ communities submitted, we chose the top 15 to move on to the voting round. Congratulations, Atwood is one of the 15!

Please encourage your community to vote, there are two different ways.

1. Social Media: this link will direct you to our Facebook page where fans can vote once a day for their favorite small town.

2. KANSAS! magazine website: If someone would like to vote, but not through Facebook that can at

We will accept votes through May 31. The five communities with the most votes will be unveiled in the winter issue of KANSAS! (November).

Every Kansas town has its authentic qualities and experiences, each with their own homegrown charm – and who knows better than the locals. With ninety percent of the towns in Kansas having a population less than 5,000, we need help identifying the best small towns in the Sunflower State.

Welcome to Atwood!

Beautifully situated along the Beaver Creek in Northwest Kansas, Atwood is a forward-thinking High Plains community whose doors are always open to visitors, returning Alumni and new residents alike. We are a people of strong pioneer heritage, with values such as neighbor helping neighbor and a positive, can-do attitude. Expect a friendly smile when you arrive!

Atwood is an established agricultural community. But we are also home to thriving, long-term businesses and promising new entrepreneurial ventures…and we are growing, as we become increasingly known for our family-friendly environment. We focus on maintaining quality schools, where academics are enhanced by excellent programs of fine arts, vocational skills, athletics and music. Community programs also offer a variety of educational and recreational experiences, from 4-H and Scouts to gymnastics, kids wrestling, swim team and other activities. A new youth center highlights our town’s commitment to providing a safe, healthy environment for our kids.

The centerpiece of our town is beautiful Lake Atwood, whose recreational offerings and serene beauty enrich the lives of young and old. Its golf course, baseball diamond, nature trail, walking path, playground, picnic areas, camping sites and RV hookups draw locals and visitors alike.

Welcome to Atwood! We are glad to meet you!
